The Quest Continues...

Opera is when a guy gets stabbed and instead of bleeding, he sings.-- Ed Gardner

The opera isn’t over till the fat lady sings.

And so the quest for some different opinions on opera goes on! One opinion down, hopefully more to follow. Alright, I have some humerous, hopefully inspirational quotes on opera. Please leave a comment on what you think of opera. Like I said previously, I want to write an article on opera, but first, I want to get an idea of what people besides me think about it. I hope you all have a great rest of the week!

In Christ,
Kaila

Well for the record, I've never seen an opera, except I did hear an opera singer at a concert- (he was excellent by the way:), so I don't know much about them. But in regards to the standards we set for what's acceptable, I would say that our standards should be the same for all forms of movies, musicals, operas etc. Our standards shouldn't change just because the singer is singing in a different language and we have no clue what they're saying:) God's Word gives us the guidelines- whatsoever things are true, noble, just, pure, lovely, or of good report and on the verse goes. Also what is the message the singer is conveying? Would we be comfortable watching it with Jesus sitting right there next to us, or not? If not, maybe we should rethink what it is we're watching. After all He really is right there beside us anyway. And then, some operas I'm sure are just fine- as I said before my knowledge of operas is about next to none.:)

Keep up the good work Kaila!

Hi Kaila,
I've never been to an opera but Grandpa Bill has. He said he enjoyed them. It doesn't seem like something I would enjoy unless it was about the life of Jesus. Granpa has seen "the Phantom of the Opera" and "Les Miserables" Not sure if i spelled that right. There are more that he has been to but I mainly just wanted to let you know that I myself have never seen one except on Public TV.

Lol! That first quote made me laugh pretty hard. :)

Opera, as far as the sound goes, is not my favorite genre. I love musicals, but I simply do not care for the way opera singers sing. It is truly amazing, though. Certainly they are full of God-given talent, and it is a beautiful way for them to use their abilities.
I think, as far as operas themselves go, storylines are what matter. I mean, you can have a beautiful, amazing one, and you can also have one that is rather not-so-good. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the music; it is a beautiful gift from God. But storylines... same as goes for any story. It depends.

As to musicals in general... they are some of the most amazing inventions on earth, and I listen to them frequently. ;) Les Miserables is a favorite here. But that is slightly off-topic, I suppose.

Blessings,
Rebekah

I have to admit, I really like operas. I like tragedy and yes, sometimes romance. But there is a part of how mature you are, how you’re going to act after your done watching or reading an opera. Are you going to play or wish you were in love and went through those tragic things these people went through? Are you going to play or wish you were in love and everything went out just right? Those are some of my problems. I wish that something tragic would happen to me, but now as I think about it, how is that attitude glorifying to God? How ridiculous it is to wish that something silly would happen to me. Now my whole aspect on operas has changed. I still like operas very much, but now I only read and watch operas every once in a while and I don’t want silly things to happen to me. Instead I would rather do things to glorify God.
